In our July convening, we will have two presentations that are slightly different from our norm.
The first is a look into an organization that is a distinctive part of the bioscience ecosystem in our region, BioKansas. Though not specifically focused on digital health, BioKansas plays a crucial role in innovation and the development and promotion of science and technology throughout the state and, as such, KC Digital Drive looks to BioKansas as a partner organization.
Our presenter will be Sonia Hall, Ph.D., President and CEO of BioKansas. Dr. Hall received her PhD in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Kansas, followed by two years of postdoctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She has focused her career on designing and leading initiatives that aim to make science and the paths towards scientific careers more equitable. These efforts have resulted in the creation of numerous programs, publications, and initiatives; leading her to share her expertise with a variety of national and international audiences.
We have asked Dr. Hall to speak about a unique event, the BioKansas Innovation Festival, which will be held August 6th at Crown Center in Kansas City, and then reflect upon a focus of the festival – biologics – and the degree to which this field has become a focus in the regional ecosystem.
Our second presentation differs slightly from our usual attention to organizations supplying the digital health sector in our region, but we feel it fits well within the scope of the Health Innovation Team. One of the organizations regularly attending our meetings is Illumisoft. Ilumisoft is a software company developing solutions for research institutions, hospitals, private practices, and clinics.
As with many custom software houses, Illumisoft has found that much of their work could be extended to other clients, and even to entire health marketplaces. For instance, they have been developing a solution for patient engagement and remote monitoring that they believe would have broad applicability, and they are willing to let our team have an early look at it and provide feedback. This is a unique opportunity for our team and will allow us to converse with several of the team members from Illumisoft.
In other items, we have posted the materials from the June meeting here. If you did not have the chance to attend, we highly recommend that you watch the video. Dr. David Voran of University Health and UMKC presented a session on the increasing breadth of data captured in the Apple Health application and the ease of its integration into the electronic health record. He asks the question: If this isn’t interoperability, then what is? The potential power of this is immense.
