This month we build upon our maternal/infant health focus with discussion of an effort to bring national attention to the Kansas City area. Our second presentation will take a jump into another focus area of the Health Innovation Team – population health – but this time from the perspective of employers and health plan advisors.

In August of last year, with Digital Health KC we hosted our Maternal and Infant Health Forum, and in December we heard about a vitally important regional project for maternal/infant health through a data sharing network starting up at CradleKC that will incorporate a wide array of data, including social drivers of health. This month we are advancing our “socialization” of a concept for hosting in KC a national event for standardization of maternal and infant health data.

Community member and domain expert Kendra Wyatt will describe the nature and magnitude of the proposed Maternal Health Data Exchange Summit. This will be a big undertaking involving many assets from our region. You can start learning now about the kinds of contributions and support individuals and organizations can provide.

Kendra brings expertise from both maternal heath and data. She co-founded New Birth Company, a birthing center in the Kansas City area that focused on natural childbirth and maternal empowerment. In her international travels she studied alternative childbirth methods with the aim of shifting the narrative of pregnancy away from being treated solely as a medical condition. Her data expertise is extensive, including her current work providing market based consulting and education services to States, LPHAs, Legislators, Plans, & Provider organizations. She also addresses population health strategies to successfully increase utilization of Midwives and Birth Centers. She provides applied application of HITECH, TEFCA, USCDI+ Maternal Health to support maternal and child health programming. She worked in strategy roles for Cerner for over 13 years.

In our second presentation, we will look at the KC-based company NavMD. NavMDm works with employers, benefits advisors, and others who need to evaluate populations for health care risks, health plan design, and cost containment strategies. They can provide immediate access to data on any sized health plan and assert that they can acquire, transform, and enrich data in just 60 days (as opposed to many months elsewhere in the industry). NavMD also is known for working in concert with the systems of solution partners covering a wide range of health disciplines.

Our presenter will be Joe Bush, Chief Strategy Officer. Prior to joining NavMD in 2021, he worked at Cerner Corporation for over 15 years in various roles, including Director of Direct to Employer Strategy and Director of Population Health Services Strategy. His responsibilities at Cerner involved strategic planning and operations. Joe holds an MBA from the University of Kansas with a focus on Finance and International Business, as well as a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in Secondary Education with a specialization in Biology.

Every month, we bring together a group of health care stakeholders to learn and share about technology and innovation projects happening in the region–and occasionally related topics from outside the Greater Kansas City area. Our stakeholders include hospitals and the health care system, city and state government officials, health IT firms and other corporate partners, startups working in health and wellness, and other civic organizations. The meetings are open, though not widely broadcast. They generally happen on the last Wednesday of the month, 8:30-10:00 am.

We send out an email agenda and calendar invite to this stakeholder list, which we loosely call the Health Innovation Team. If you wish to be added to the email list, please send a note to jfitzpatrick@kcdigitaldrive.org.
