We are combining our November and December meetings to accommodate the holidays. So, please join us on Zoom December 4th for two great topics in women’s health.

In early September, the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health held a workshop on “Using AI to Better Understand Menopause”. In was intended to bring together researchers in the biomedical and advanced computing fields to promote interdisciplinary work targeted at the understudied area of research: menopause and women’s health. The ultimate hope was to drive development of novel teams of women’s health researchers in the United States.

Kansas City’s own Kim Templeton, MD, FAAOS, FAOA, FAMWA, was a moderator of one of the panel discussions in the workshop, and we have asked her to share her perspectives on the event. Dr. Templeton is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She is also Vice-Chair for Faculty Development in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Her clinical practice is focused on orthopedic oncology, as well as women’s musculoskeletal health. Her research is in the area of sex and gender medicine and the inclusion of this into health professions’ education, as well as the issues faced by women physicians. More here.

Our second presentation will build upon our recent Digital Health Innovation Forum on maternal and infant health. In that event, Mariah Chrans of the Community Health Council (CHC) of Wyandotte County spoke about the lack of data in the field. It is often two or more years old, or not available at all. This makes it very difficult for health and social service organizations to develop programs that address current needs. Through CradleKC, Mariah was able to bring local stakeholders together to begin a project built upon sharing of data.

Mariah Chrans is the Programs Director for CHC, and Project Director of Cradle Kansas City. She has worked in public health and maternal child health for 16 years. Mariah received a PhD in Public Health and Community Health in 2021.  Her research background is in maternal and infant health, with a focus on the perinatal and intrapartum period. Mariah joined the Community Health Council of Wyandotte team in September of 2018 with 15 years of maternal and infant health and community health experience. More here.

In other news, remember the Digital Health Innovation Forum, December 9, at 5:30 p.m., where we will discuss lessons learned from COVID-19. Program and registration for this free event are here.

Every month, we bring together a group of health care stakeholders to learn and share about technology and innovation projects happening in the region–and occasionally related topics from outside the Greater Kansas City area. Our stakeholders include hospitals and the health care system, city and state government officials, health IT firms and other corporate partners, startups working in health and wellness, and other civic organizations. The meetings are open, though not widely broadcast. They generally happen on the last Wednesday of the month, 8:30-10:00 am.

We send out an email agenda and calendar invite to this stakeholder list, which we loosely call the Health Innovation Team. If you wish to be added to the email list, please send a note to jfitzpatrick@kcdigitaldrive.org.
